Olhar Periférico, is my final project before graduating from university, studying fashion. I created the clothes and accessories through the process of upcycling, producing all visual content to showcase the products. The idea behind the pieces created, was to show the progress made as an artist, designer and activist, participating within fashion.
My research starts from the perspective that the human being is a product of their envoirement and as an artist, what they produce brings back memories, aesthetic and the effects of the environment they were raised in. Relating to Glauber Rocha (brazilian film director and one of the creators of the “new cinema movement”) via an artistic lens, I raise certain questions; what is the focus, the aesthetics, the scenario and the way we search to break the patterns within art, to be a pioneer and transcending ideas/ideals? This is how I see myself as an artist, being able to use art in order to galvanise a society towards a revolution, striving for a utopia.
When I went back to my city (also the birth place of Glauber Rocha’s) I was inspired by daily things; the peripheric culture, childhood dreams, the symbolism, the essence of my memories surfaced with a new outlook- Who am I now? This inspired the creative of the project, the artistics manifestations as funk and graffiti. The film is a mix of cinema, fashion, street, art, and all the references that influenced me.
